Relay by Humanity Incorporated

Relay

Relay connects the AI tools people use with the human organisations whose wisdom and guidance they want to draw on.

Someone using AI at work might need their employer’s procedures, their profession’s standards or guidance from a research institution. Relay makes those sources available for consultation as their work develops, while keeping clear where the guidance comes from and whose responsibility it represents.

This allows human guidance to inform the many questions and decisions that arise during regular AI use. It can help people recognise risks, check an answer and understand when a decision needs further human judgement.

The individual chooses which organisations to include. An organisation can support many people, and can draw on other institutions in its own work. These connections allow different bodies of human knowledge and judgement to inform the same situation.

For organisations and institutions

Relay gives organisations a way to make their wisdom useful in the tools people already use, where questions arise and decisions are being prepared.

Organisations remain responsible for their contributions.

As knowledge and circumstances change, they can revise their guidance and make reviewed updates available through the same connection. This helps their guidance remain useful as AI tools and working practices change.

Relay also supports institutions in addressing the risks AI poses to the people they serve. Their standards and experience can help people identify problems before acting. Questions that people choose to bring back can reveal where further attention is needed.

The responsible institution can examine the evidence and act through its own powers and responsibilities. That might involve helping someone directly, changing a practice, setting requirements for an AI service or investigating a problem with others.

Why a relay?

  1. OutAn institution’s guidance can reach someone through the AI they use.
  2. BackThat person can choose to bring an unresolved question or experience back to the institution.
  3. RespondThe institution can respond, examine what needs to change
  4. Shareand share what it learns.

The wisdom being carried can therefore develop through use. A finding from one workplace or community can become useful elsewhere, after review and with appropriate permission.

People remain in control of what they contribute. Making guidance available to an AI tool does not give an organisation access to someone’s private conversations.

Its purpose

Humanity Incorporated is developing Relay to serve individuals, organisations and institutions, and strengthen their ability to understand and respond to AI risks.

This is part of a wider commitment to human sovereignty: people should retain the practical ability to exercise judgement, challenge decisions and act through institutions accountable to them.

Relay carries human wisdom into everyday use of AI while helping people and institutions strengthen that wisdom and their capacity to act.
